Cinco de Mayo (aka "A Good Excuse to Eat Queso")

Happy Cinco de Mayo!

In honor of this celebration of the Mexican victory over the French in the Battle of Puebla in 1862 (Thank You, Google), we have tossed around a bit of festiveness here at casa de phillips. The morning began with some yummy breakfast burritos, followed by a nutritious meal at McDonald's for lunch (more on that to come), and for dinner we indulged in chips and queso and Chicken Enchiladas with Creamy Green Salsa. Ole!

As mentioned, today the children and I met up with a friend and her children for lunch. Originally we had planned to dine at the ever-popular Chick-fil-a, but rainy weather made us change our plans at the last minute (our Chick-fil-a playground is outside). After getting settled in with our healthy meals of chicken nuggets, apple slices, and juice, another mom entered the play/dining area. She proceeded to drop her not-yet 18 month old off in the play area and then left to order her food. It should be noted that the main part of the restaurant and the front counter are a separate room from the play area...a room that cannot be seen from the front of the store. The mom eventually returned after my friend and I felt responsible for watching this baby and making sure she did not escape out of one of the two fire exits or consume various food pieces off the floor. The mom came back, food and older child in tow. The family ate and then the children rushed to play on the playscape. The mom chatted with my friend and me, inquiring about our children's ages. She then proceeded to pick Evelyn up and twirl her around, talking to her and kissing her before finally putting her back on the ground.

Um, that's not cool.

If you are my friend or an acquaintance, feel free to appropriately love on my children. If you are a stranger, you may talk to them and then be on your merry way.

Let it be known that I am quite non-confrontational so my response was to walk over to this mom and nervously said, "Here, let me take her from you." as I retrieved Evelyn (and did not let her go until strange mom vacated the area....who happened to return about five minutes later in search of her older child who she had seemed to misplace).

How do you feel about strangers picking up your child? How would you have handled the situation?

I do not want strangers picking up my child (at all either) and would have reacted just like you did...

What are we supposed to do?

Oh, that would have absolutely fired me up. I don't even trust my friends and family half the time! I cannot believe the woman kissed her. That is too much. I am very non-confrontational too. I probably would have said something like, "Excuse me. Can I help you?" when she first picked her up. I don't know. Then I would have beat her up.

uh, talk about uncomfortable. I honestly dont' know that I've had this happen- certainly not the kissing part. That is weird! I think you handled it beautifully.

I would not have handled it as well as you did. That is very strange.

I got pretty fired up just reading about it, but you seemed to handle it with calm and poise. I would call what you did "mature confrontation". Not all confrontation has to have fists and mean looks:-)

Wow, wow, wow......that mom is just bizarre to me, but I think you handled it perfectly. A random nurse at the dr. office asked to hold B recently and I looked at her like she had just asked me to rob a bank with her- I eventually gave in, but only for a few seconds.

I didn't even like for strangers to touch Sie much less pick him up!
I honestly don't know what I would have done. You handled yourself very well!
